I recently embarked on an extraordinary adventure at the ACTFL convention, held in the enchanting windy city of Chicago, IL. Let me tell you, it was an absolute blast! This convention took my knowledge of early childhood language learning to soaring heights, revealing the profound impact it has on blossoming minds. The event kicked off with three remarkable past recipients of the language teacher of the year award gracing the stage. As they basked in the glory of their well-deserved accolades, they opened up about the profound takeaways they’ve gained since being bestowed with such a prestigious honor.
These awe-inspiring educators weren’t just soaking up the glory. Oh no, they recognized the responsibility that comes with their newfound recognition. They understood that the preservation of foreign language teaching rests in their capable hands. Passionately, they revealed their fear that if they don’t champion this cause, language education will dwindle into oblivion. It was a rallying cry for all language lovers to rise up and join the fight to protect this beautiful discipline.
But that wasn’t all that these legendary language heroes had to say. They shared their transformative journeys from focusing solely on language to centering their attention on the fantastic individuals standing before them— their students. The key, they claimed, is building meaningful relationships, cultivating trust, and nurturing personal development. By prioritizing their students’ growth and well-being, they believe that language outcomes will naturally flourish. The mantra echoed throughout the convention halls: “Develop and love the student!” It was a call to action, urging us to change our students’ perspectives on the world and reshape their worldview. And when we accomplish that as language teachers, we can proudly say we’ve fulfilled our divine mission.
As the convention came to a close, we were left with a profound truth that reverberated through every soul present. Language, my friends, is a unifying force that makes us all one. It connects people across cultures, bridges gaps, and lights up a global tapestry woven with the threads of countless languages. How exhilarating!
Now, my excitement intensifies even more, and I can hardly contain myself. Why, you ask? Because I have an incredible announcement to make. ACTFL has declared that their next convention, slated for 2024, will be held in the magical city of Philadelphia, PA. Can you picture it? The historic streets filled with thriving language enthusiasts, their hearts swelling with passion and their minds bursting with endless possibilities. I, for one, cannot wait to soak in the knowledge, meet inspiring language professionals, and bring back a treasure trove of resources to my eager students.
So, my friends, mark your calendars, update your GPS, and get ready for an unforgettable journey. As we gather in the City of Brotherly Love, let us ignite the flames of language education, band together, and conquer the world with the power of words.
